Life In My Desert

Life In My Desert

My friend, where are you and why am I here in a desert? I see nothing but dry sand blowing over the hills. The sky is like blue waves of pulsating heat. Why is the whole world giving me misery? There is no sign of life, but a hostile sun; you are not with me as I face myself. I am alone looking in to find something out. Who am I really and what gives me life?

Suddenly I squint into the distance and see you. I yell out a "hey there!" and dash over the first hill. Now it's a lake I find all ashimmer, not you. "He is not your lifeline!" the illusion is laughing at me. I could have melted right there to my great horror; I was nothing, I was no one, I was alone in my love. Onto the hot sand I crumble like a character in cartoons. Dear God, is my friend laughing like that at me?

I hear your voice and smiling, look up once more. Perhaps that is you or only an illusion to tempt me. Slowly I stand up and brush off the sand; as I come ever closer, my friend, you go further! With every hill that I climb, I understand that life is a quest. We do not possess the goals we desire, they lead us to freedom. For if I had you as my own, it would be an illusion. I shall be free of such hunger and seek life in my desert.
